The One Where They Meet

It feels natural in this new blog since it not only centers around my life, but our life to start off with a little "Story of Us" if you will! I will try to keep it from becoming a novel, but no promises!

The story of how Mr. and I met is not exactly the most magical one... I guess it's more of a typical modern one. Fresh off a long-overdue breakup from a long-term relationship, I found myself desperate to meet some new people. Maybe not find someone to "be in a relationship" with right away, but at least some new faces to break out of my shell which consisted of staying home, watching movies, and scrolling through Tumblr all night long. This is what drew me to OkCupid, and ultimately the man I am going to marry!

Anyone who has spent time on OkCupid knows if you are a lady, you tend to draw a lot of messages. It becomes a tad daunting to check your email regularly and to every time be welcomed with 20-something new "what's up?"s from various menfolk throughout the tristate area. They all seem to blend together into one giant, overwhelming sea of boring men-monsters who have nothing interesting to start a conversation with other than “Hey.”. Great. My knights in shining armor! That is of course until my lovely fiancĂ© made his debut. Let’s just look at some quotes from his original messages:

The first thing he ever said to me. Literally: " I hate gizmodo, mostly because jesus banned me from it a while ago, I was a star commentator, but yea, I blame it on me being a jew and his name being jesus"

And it goes on... "On politics i like a quote by ayn rand 'I am only interested in politics, so one day I won't have to be.'"

And still... "'ever politician should serve two terms, one in office, one in prison'"

How could I not respond to that? Messaging back and forth on the site, arguing politics and discussing our tastes in moves and music quickly turned into instant messaging and texting which quickly turned into us meeting up which quickly turned into… me absolutely hating this guy. Go figure. What can I say? The Mr. does not exactly make the greatest first impression! He is however, notoriously driven and not one to give up easily. Over the course of the next few months I still found myself talking to him regularly. As time progressed, we broke down the sarcastic walls we both tend to hide behind and started to really get to know each other. Ultimately there came a point where I could no longer fight it. I liked him and it was pretty apparent he liked me back.

The rest is history! We started “officially dating” shortly afterward, moved in together a whole 8 months later, and were engaged a year or so after that. We have a dog and a cat and we even now own a home! (But more on that later!)

We’ve been together just over 2 years now and suffice it to say, I am the happiest I’ve even been. We fit together better than anything I’ve ever experienced before. I never knew it was possible to connect to someone the way I feel with him. For a long time, I doubted that real love even existed. Now I can confidently say that I know it’s real, and that I am so, so lucky to get to experience it.

  1. yay for making it out of the sea of men-monsters! Gotta love the single gal moments on the prowl moments though, they do make some great stories.
